What is Sashcord?

Collins dictionary defines sash cord as: “a cord attached to either side of a sliding sash, having balancing weights (sash weights) so that the window can be raised or lowered easily.” This is the American definition – the British one, rather disappointingly, is much less helpful.

So, sash cords are used by the building trade and DIY enthusiasts to fit or repair traditional sash windows. The cord is attached to the sides of a sliding sash window, housed in channels behind beadings, which has balanced weights. The weights hang from the cord that works over the pulley wheel usually sited at the top of the window frame. This mechanism allows the window to slide open and close safely.

Our popular sash cords are supplied in 10 metre hanks and 100 metre reels. The most common materials are jute, cotton and nylon. We stock and source a range of diameters – each material and diameter provides different qualities and breaking strengths to ensure safe fitting or repair of the smallest window to the largest.

Jute sashcord hanks or reels are hard wearing and resistant to heat and moisture.

Cotton sashcord in waxed and braided hanks and reels are made with a synthetic core for additional strength. Cotton is durable, weather resistant and knots securely.

Nylon sashcord in hanks or reels is regarded by many within the trade as the ‘King’ of all the sash cords. Nylon sashcord is strong, provides better shock absorbency and higher abrasion resistance than other sashcord materials.

Sash cord has many other applications in theatre, studio and stage productions, and for general tying around the home or garden.

We can source sash cords in other lengths, materials and colours on request. Don’t forget, Kendon Rope and Twine’s expert team is here to help you with any product enquiry.
