What makes rope different from cord or twine?

Rope is generally constructed from lengths of natural or synthetic fibres or yarns that are twisted or braided together to form a thicker and stronger construction. Rope is used for heavier duty tasks, such as lifting, pulling, lashing, securing and tying.

Cords, twine and strings are constructed in a very similar way, generally twisted or braided from thinner natural or synthetic fibres or yarns consisting of one or more strands. Cords, twines and strings are supplied in a range of diameters and strengths and used widely for tying, baling and securing lighter objects. Also for crafts, decoration, textiles… the list of applications is endless.

So, in the most simple of terms and without getting all technical; what makes a rope different from a cord or a twine is that it has greater dimension, weight and strength and is used for larger industrial, building or DIY projects.
